Repair or Replace Mar 22, 2007 One year to the day from when I purchased my D50 with 18-55mm lens, the lens decided to stop autofocusing between 35 and 55mm.
What I tried so far: Focus Mode set to AF-A, I can make blurry photos when set to M. Rangefinder is ON. Detach and reattach lenses. Cleaned lens. Charge battery fully. I do not have button on lens M<>A, its only set in menu. AE-L/AF-L button is not pressed - when pressed I can make blurry photos again.
Good riddance. Nikon's 18-55mm P is extraordinary in that unlike every other 18-55mm kit lens, its new stepper autofocus motor lets it focus essentially instantly, even in near total darkness, even on the cheapest D3300 camera. It focuses so close that you won't need a macro lens.

1 Answer. No, there is nothing you can do. Nikon's AF-P lenses do not work with the D5100. At the time of release of the first AF-P lenses (the 18β55mm, both with and without VR), the only cameras that supported AF-P lenses were D5300 and D5500, and a firmware update was made available to the D3300 so it would support AF-P lenses as well.
When you activate live view, the camera uses contrast detection. Contrast detection is available only in the live view mode because it needs the camera's sensor. I've also never taken off this lens for the 6 years I've had the camera. Recently, I got a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S lens. After I took off the original 18-55mm lens to attach this new 50mm, the Autofocus stopped working. I checked all of the focusing switches (both the one on the body and the lens) and all are in the correct positions (AF and M/A).

If you can't get a focus confirmation when focusing manually and or don't get aperture confirmation when setting aperture then the chip in the lens may have failed. One thing you can try is to mount the lens, on camera body switch from AF to Manual then back again. I had one lens not focus once and after doing that the lens started working again.

Although there are several variations of Nikon 18-55mm kit lenses, most if not all of them have an AF/MF switch on the lens as well. Have you checked the switch on the lens to see if it has been moved? If the camera menu has AF turned off but the lens switch is set to AF you may not be able to move the focus ring on the lens.
